What Is Nail Disease?

Any abnormality associated with nail matrix or nail bed is called nail disease. Common nail disorders are Beau’s lines, Onychomadesis, Pitting, Onychorrhexis, Koilonychia, Onycholysis, Nail infection, Benign and malignant growth associated with nail bed.

What Causes Nail Disease?

Disorders affecting nail matrix will be presented as abnormal nail plates. Psoriasis, eczema and alopecia areata can all affect the nail matrix which will be presented with unique nail plate pitting. Glomus tumor or other tumors associated with nail bed can be presented as discoloration or distortion of nail plates.

Clinical Presentations Of Nail Disease
    • Nail plate or bed diseases, nail infection and other nail disorders have diverse clinical presentations. Common nail presentation
      • Nail pitting due to psoriasis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), alopecia areata
      • Onychomycosis (nail fungus infection) can present as white or yellowish discoloration affecting different aspects of nail plates or presence of skin debris under nail plat
Complication Of Nail Disease

Melanoma can affect nail matrix which mostly presented as discoloration of nail plate which is extended to nail matrix (Hutchinson sign). If nail melanoma is missed or diagnosed late, patient may end up getting amputation or melanoma gets metastasized to rest of the body

Treatment Options for Nail Disease
    • The treatment related with each nail disorder is unique and specific.
      • Over the counter medications
        • Onychomycosis
          • Topical antifungal medications including miconazole
      • Prescription
        • Topical medications
          • Jublia (topical antifungal) application twice a day, more than a year for toe nail fungus
          • Protopic for nail pitting, apply twice a day to nail matrix
        • Systemic therapy
          • Systemic antifungal or antibacterial for nail infection
          • Immunosuppressive medication to address underlying skin disorder will resolve the nail abnormalities associated with the skin disorder
Prevention Of Nail Disease

Addressing the underlying inflammatory skin condition can prevent some of the nail plate disorders.
