What Is Hives?

Urticaria or hive is inflammation and edema within top layers of skin. They are mostly due to release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators

What Causes Hives?
  • Urticaria can be due to upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in 40% of cases
  • Due to medications in 9% of cases
  • Due to food in 1% of cases
  • Most cases (50%) are due to unknow cause
Clinical Presentations Of Hives
  • It presents as ill-defined erythematous (red) edematous (swelling) plaques that tends to mostly around and itchy most of the times
  • Urticaria vasculitis tend to last more than 24 hrs and can be associated with joint swelling and significant skin pain
  • Physical urticaria
    • Occurs within minutes of physical insult and tends to resolve within hours
    • Patients can break out in hives after exposure to heat, cold, sun exposure, stressful event, exercise, constant pressure, vibration or exposure to water
Complication Of Hives

Urticaria can be associated with angioedema which can be life threatening, those patients present with abdominal pain, mucosal swelling as well as hives
